Charleroi nightly air traffic control strike pushes cancellations above 200

Brussels South Charleroi Airport continues to face disruption from nightly Skeyes air traffic controller industrial action. The nightly stoppages that had run from 22:00 to 08:00 have been suspended while mediation begins. Residual schedule effects remain possible, and passengers should check current airline status.

What happened

Aviation24 reported that the strike has run nightly since 16 September and is scheduled through 10 October. More than 200 flights had already been cancelled, with 42 further cancellations expected on 23 September and another 14 services due to operate on changed schedules. Ryanair, the airport's largest operator, accounts for much of the affected programme.

Operational conditions can change quickly. Check the airline and airport for live status before travelling.

Compensation is only one part of your rights

An external air traffic control strike can be relevant to the extraordinary-circumstances defence against fixed EU261 compensation. It does not automatically remove care, rerouting or refund rights. The operating airline must still connect the external event to the passenger's individual disruption and take reasonable measures.

01

Fixed compensation

Do not assume it is automatically due. The cause, applicable passenger-rights regime and the airline's response all matter.

02

Refund or rerouting

A cancellation can create travel-remedy rights even where an extraordinary circumstance prevents fixed compensation.

03

Care and expenses

Where the applicable rules provide a duty of care, reasonable meals, accommodation or transport can remain separate from compensation.

What to do now

Check your airline before travelling even if your scheduled flight is outside the overnight strike hours. Keep the cancellation or delay reason, rerouting offer, final journey outcome and itemised receipts.
