Fixed compensation
Do not assume it is automatically due. The cause, applicable passenger-rights regime and the airline's response all matter.
Passengers travelling through Catania should continue checking their individual flight before travelling to the airport. Catania Airport has faced repeated restrictions and suspensions during the latest Mount Etna ash episode, while the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center continued issuing operational Etna advisories through the evening of 16 September. The existence of an ash advisory does not by itself mean that every flight is cancelled or that the airport is closed: airline flight status and current airport instructions remain decisive for each passenger.

Check my affected flight →Reuters reported that Catania suspended flights on 14 September because of volcanic ash from Mount Etna, with restrictions extended during the day. SAC subsequently reported restored arriving and departing operations on the evening of 15 September after the aviation alert moved from red to orange. Toulouse VAAC's operational advisory list remained active for Etna on 16 September, including advisory ETNA.165 at 22:00 UTC. This continuing monitoring matters because cancellations, diversions, aircraft positioning and accumulated delays can persist around an ash event even when airport operations have resumed. It does not establish that every Catania flight is currently disrupted.
Volcanic ash and associated airspace safety restrictions are generally capable of being extraordinary circumstances under EU261, so fixed compensation is not automatic where they directly caused a cancellation or long delay. That is separate from the airline's obligations concerning care, rerouting or reimbursement when EU261 applies. The precise cause and timing still matter, particularly if a flight remained disrupted after airport restrictions were lifted.
Do not assume it is automatically due. The cause, applicable passenger-rights regime and the airline's response all matter.
A cancellation can create travel-remedy rights even where an extraordinary circumstance prevents fixed compensation.
Where the applicable rules provide a duty of care, reasonable meals, accommodation or transport can remain separate from compensation.
Check the operating airline's live flight status before travelling to Catania Airport and verify whether your service has been cancelled, delayed or diverted. Keep your original itinerary, airline messages, the stated reason for disruption, rerouting offers, actual arrival time and itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation or necessary transport. If disruption continues after an airport reopening, retain the carrier's explanation rather than assuming volcanic ash was necessarily the sole cause.
AeroDue separates the cause, itinerary and operating airline so passengers do not confuse an airport-wide incident with an automatic compensation result.
