What happened

Reuters reported that arrivals were stopped at the three main New York-area airports and that roughly 1,400 flights at those airports were delayed or cancelled. More than 100 flights were diverted during the wider Northeast incident. LaGuardia reopened after being closed to incoming flights for much of the afternoon.

Operational conditions can change quickly. Check the airline and airport for live status before travelling.

Compensation is only one part of your rights

A New York airport disruption does not by itself determine the passenger-rights regime. US domestic protections differ from EU261 and UK261, while some flights departing Europe or the UK for New York can remain covered by those regimes. The operating carrier, departure point and actual outcome of the flight therefore matter.

01

Fixed compensation

Do not assume it is automatically due. The cause, applicable passenger-rights regime and the airline's response all matter.

02

Refund or rerouting

A cancellation can create travel-remedy rights even where an extraordinary circumstance prevents fixed compensation.

03

Care and expenses

Where the applicable rules provide a duty of care, reasonable meals, accommodation or transport can remain separate from compensation.

What to do now

Keep the scheduled itinerary, operating carrier, airline explanation, actual arrival or cancellation details and receipts. For a Europe-to-New York or UK-to-New York journey, check the departure-side passenger-rights rules as well as the airline's US rebooking or refund options.
