FAA telecom outage disrupted Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Philadelphia and Boston flights

A telecommunications failure at the FAA facility serving the US Northeast forced ground stops and widespread delays and cancellations on 21 September. The primary communications circuit failed and a backup fibre line was also severed, restricting arrivals at major airports for hours. Repairs were completed later that day, but passengers faced substantial residual disruption.

What happened

Reuters reported about 7,000 delayed or cancelled flights nationwide during the event, including roughly 1,400 at the three main New York-area airports, while more than 100 flights were diverted. AP reported more than 600 cancellations at Newark alone and said commercial arrivals there were effectively halted for much of the day. The FAA said normal operations resumed after communications were restored.

Operational conditions can change quickly. Check the airline and airport for live status before travelling.

Compensation is only one part of your rights

For US domestic journeys, passenger remedies differ from EU261 and UK261. A passenger whose airline cancels a flight and does not provide the alternative travel accepted by the passenger may have refund rights under US rules, while additional hotel, meal or rebooking support can depend on the airline's commitments and the circumstances. International itineraries can engage additional rules, so the route and operating carrier matter.

01

Fixed compensation

Do not assume it is automatically due. The cause, applicable passenger-rights regime and the airline's response all matter.

02

Refund or rerouting

A cancellation can create travel-remedy rights even where an extraordinary circumstance prevents fixed compensation.

03

Care and expenses

Where the applicable rules provide a duty of care, reasonable meals, accommodation or transport can remain separate from compensation.

What to do now

Keep the airline's cancellation or delay notice, original itinerary, replacement travel details and receipts. If your journey touched Europe or the UK, check whether that segment falls within a separate passenger-rights regime rather than assuming US rules are the only rules that matter.

Check the facts of your flight

AeroDue separates the cause, itinerary and operating airline so passengers do not confuse an airport-wide incident with an automatic compensation result.
