Quick answer

easyJet flight delay compensation: up to £520 / €600

A qualifying easyJet delay can lead to fixed compensation of up to £520 under UK261 or up to €600 under EC261, depending on the route, operating easyJet entity, flight distance and final arrival delay. Arrival generally needs to be at least three hours late for fixed compensation, and extraordinary circumstances can change the result. Care and reimbursement rights are separate.

How much compensation could be due?

Fixed compensation is only one part of passenger rights. The applicable regime, flight distance, final arrival delay, disruption cause and any rerouting can change the amount or remove fixed compensation entirely.

UK261 fixed compensation reference
Flight distance Arrival delay Reference amount
Under 1,500 km 3+ hours £220
1,500–3,500 km 3+ hours £350
Over 3,500 km 3–4 hours £260
Over 3,500 km 4+ hours £520

These are UK Civil Aviation Authority reference amounts for qualifying delays. They are not an automatic entitlement: UK261 coverage and the cause of the disruption still need to be established.

EC261 fixed compensation reference
Flight distance / route Reference amount
1,500 km or less €250
Intra-EU over 1,500 km, or other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km €400
Other flights over 3,500 km Up to €600

For long-haul EC261 delays, the amount can depend on the arrival delay and may be reduced in some rerouting situations. Extraordinary circumstances can also remove fixed compensation.

First identify whether UK261 or EC261 applies

easyJet operates UK and European airline entities, so the route and operating carrier determine which passenger-rights regime is relevant. A UK departure can bring UK261 into scope, while many EU departures and EU-carrier arrivals fall under EC261.

Do not choose the currency first and work backwards. Start with the actual itinerary and operating carrier, then apply the correct legal framework.

The three-hour rule is based on arrival at the final destination

easyJet's current notice of rights states that passengers arriving at least three hours after the original scheduled arrival time may be entitled to compensation, subject to the applicable rules and the cause of the disruption.

Departure delay alone is therefore not enough to establish the fixed payment. Record the final arrival time, especially where the booking includes a connection.

  • Keep the booking confirmation and operating flight number.
  • Record the scheduled and actual final arrival times.
  • Save any easyJet explanation of the reason for the delay.

How much an eligible easyJet delay can be worth

easyJet publishes UK and EU reference bands side by side: £220 / €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, £350 / €400 for the middle distance bands and up to £520 / €600 for longer flights. The exact amount can be lower in particular long-haul or rerouting situations.

Care, hotel costs and the five-hour choice

Care rights can arise before fixed compensation is established. Depending on the wait and journey, that can include meals, refreshments and accommodation where an overnight stay becomes necessary.

If a covered delay reaches five hours and you decide not to travel, reimbursement can become relevant. Keep itemised receipts when reasonable assistance was not provided directly.

Extraordinary circumstances still matter

Severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, security events and other external causes can affect fixed compensation. Technical or operational causes need a flight-specific assessment rather than a generic assumption that every disruption is extraordinary.
