Quick answer

Ryanair flight delay compensation: up to €600 under EU261

A qualifying Ryanair delay can lead to fixed EU261 compensation of €250, €400 or up to €600 per passenger, depending mainly on flight distance and the final arrival delay. The flight must be within EU261 scope, arrival at the final destination generally needs to be at least three hours late, and extraordinary circumstances can remove fixed compensation. Care and reimbursement rights are separate.

How much compensation could be due?

Fixed compensation is only one part of passenger rights. The applicable regime, flight distance, final arrival delay, disruption cause and any rerouting can change the amount or remove fixed compensation entirely.

EC261 fixed compensation reference
Flight distance / route Reference amount
1,500 km or less €250
Intra-EU over 1,500 km, or other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km €400
Other flights over 3,500 km Up to €600

For long-haul EC261 delays, the amount can depend on the arrival delay and may be reduced in some rerouting situations. Extraordinary circumstances can also remove fixed compensation.

When a Ryanair delay can qualify for EU261 compensation

Ryanair's EU261 guidance makes clear that a delay by itself is not enough. The itinerary must fall within the regulation, the operating carrier matters, and the delay is assessed at the final destination rather than only at departure.

For a standard delay claim, an arrival delay of at least three hours is a central threshold. AeroDue also checks the stated cause because a qualifying delay can still fall outside fixed compensation when the airline can rely on an applicable extraordinary-circumstances defence.

  • Confirm the Ryanair-operated flight number and route.
  • Record scheduled and actual arrival time at the final destination.
  • Keep Ryanair's message explaining the disruption, if one was provided.

Ryanair compensation amounts depend on flight distance

For qualifying EU261 cases, the standard distance bands are €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and up to €600 for other flights over 3,500 km. Long-haul delay and rerouting rules can reduce the amount in some cases.

The ticket price does not set the fixed amount. Distance, route, arrival delay and the legal outcome of the disruption do.

What can stop fixed compensation

Weather, air traffic control restrictions, security events and other circumstances outside the airline's normal control can affect fixed-compensation eligibility. The relevant question is the cause of the individual flight disruption and whether the legal extraordinary-circumstances test is met.

An external cause does not automatically erase every right. Meals, refreshments, accommodation, rerouting or reimbursement can still be relevant even when fixed compensation is unavailable.

Meals, hotel and a long-delay refund are separate rights

Ryanair's EU261 passenger-rights guidance describes reasonable meals and refreshments, communication, and hotel accommodation plus airport transport when an overnight stay becomes necessary for qualifying disruptions.

If you decide not to continue a sufficiently delayed journey, reimbursement can become a separate question. Do not treat care, refund and fixed compensation as one all-or-nothing entitlement.

What to keep before making a Ryanair claim

Keep the booking confirmation, boarding information, actual arrival evidence, disruption messages and itemised receipts for reasonable care costs. These facts make a direct claim more precise and make it easier to challenge an incorrect rejection.
