Quick answer

TAP Air Portugal flight delay compensation: up to €600

A qualifying TAP Air Portugal delay can lead to EC261 compensation of €250, €400 or up to €600 per passenger, depending on flight distance and final arrival delay. The route must fall within EC261, arrival generally needs to be at least three hours late, and extraordinary circumstances can remove fixed compensation. Care and reimbursement remain separate rights.

How much compensation could be due?

Fixed compensation is only one part of passenger rights. The applicable regime, flight distance, final arrival delay, disruption cause and any rerouting can change the amount or remove fixed compensation entirely.

EC261 fixed compensation reference
Flight distance / route Reference amount
1,500 km or less €250
Intra-EU over 1,500 km, or other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km €400
Other flights over 3,500 km Up to €600

For long-haul EC261 delays, the amount can depend on the arrival delay and may be reduced in some rerouting situations. Extraordinary circumstances can also remove fixed compensation.

Start with EC261 coverage and the final arrival delay

TAP's current conditions of carriage state that passengers whose flight reaches the final destination at least three hours late may be entitled to compensation, subject to the applicable conditions and extraordinary-circumstances rules.

Eligibility is not determined by departure delay alone. The itinerary, operating carrier, final arrival timing and disruption cause need to be checked together.

  • Keep the TAP booking confirmation and operating flight number.
  • Record the actual arrival time at the final destination.
  • Save TAP messages that state the disruption cause.

TAP compensation bands are €250, €400 and €600

TAP publishes the standard EC261 distance bands: €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for intra-Community flights over 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and €600 for flights outside those bands when the legal conditions are met.

These are reference amounts, not an automatic payout. Long-haul delay and rerouting rules can affect the final amount.

Care can be due even when compensation is disputed

TAP's conditions describe meals and drinks in reasonable proportion to the waiting time, communication and, where rerouting requires an overnight stay, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and accommodation.

These care rights are assessed separately from fixed compensation, so an extraordinary-circumstance defence does not automatically answer the care question.

A sufficiently long delay can create a reimbursement choice

When a delay becomes long enough and the passenger decides not to continue the journey, reimbursement can become relevant under the applicable passenger-rights framework. Keep the airline's offer and your decision documented.

What evidence strengthens a TAP delay claim

Keep the original itinerary, actual arrival evidence, TAP's disruption explanation and itemised receipts for reasonable assistance expenses. A claim built around those facts is stronger than one based only on the fact that the flight departed late.
