Athens airport to run single-runway operations from 5 November to 18 December 2026 for resurfacing

Athens International Airport is scheduled to operate with a single runway from 5 November to 18 December 2026, while runway 03L/21R is closed for a resurfacing project, according to the airport events listing published by EUROCONTROL. The entry is marked as having an impact on operations.

The closure is one stage of a longer project on the west runway. Since 23 September, and until 4 November, runway 03L/21R has been restricted to departures by aircraft up to ICAO code C. After the closure, the listing shows the runway used only for departures, regardless of aircraft type, from 19 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, then for departures of aircraft up to code C from 3 January to 17 February 2027, followed by another full closure from 18 to 23 February 2027.

The same listing also records that the European Entry/Exit System is affecting border-control waiting times at Athens, with a risk of congestion at peak periods, in an entry that runs until 30 November 2026.

The listing does not say how many flights, which airlines or which hours will be affected while the airport works with one runway, and it does not mention cancellations. Passengers flying to or from Athens during this period should check their flight status with their airline and allow extra time at border control.
