Did you know Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport serves domestic and international flights from a single terminal?
Editorial interpretation
Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport handles both domestic and international passengers in one passenger terminal, according to the airport's own profile. That building has seven concourses and about 563,000 square metres of space over seven storeys, including a two-storey basement, with the departure hall on the fourth floor.
The airport opened for commercial services on 28 September 2006. It lies in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province, about 31 km east of Bangkok, on a site of 22,000 rai, and operates 24 hours a day. It has two runways and 120 aircraft parking bays, of which 51 are contact gates and 69 remote parking positions, and the profile gives its maximum capacity as 76 flights per hour.
The airport's figures for 2017 show 60.8 million passengers, 49.5 million of them international and 11.3 million domestic. The same profile describes a second development phase raising capacity from 45 to 60 million passengers a year, including a midfield satellite terminal of 216,000 square metres and a 60,000 square metre terminal extension.
For travellers, these figures explain the scale of the building they pass through: a single terminal with seven concourses and 120 aircraft positions is not a small airport, even if domestic and international flights share one roof.
Passengers connecting at Suvarnabhumi should check their gate on the airport's or airline's live information and allow time to move between concourses.
