Did you know Lima moved all flights to its new Jorge Chávez terminal during a single 12-hour pause?
Editorial interpretation
Lima did not phase in its new Jorge Chávez terminal flight by flight. Lima Airport Partners, the airport operator, announced on 30 May 2025 that the complete transfer of all air operations to the new terminal would take place on Sunday 1 June 2025, with a 12-hour operational pause from 1:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The operator described the new terminal as three times the size of the existing Jorge Chávez Airport and said it would raise the airport's capacity to 40 million passengers a year. Its stated aim is for the new Jorge Chávez to become a true regional air hub.
Before the switch, the new terminal went through a trial phase, the so-called White March, which handled 19,369 passengers and about 7,664 pieces of luggage. The same announcement projected about 121,000 direct and indirect jobs for 2025.
Moving an airport's operations in one block means airlines, ground handlers, border agencies and passengers all change building at the same moment, which is why the operator set a fixed overnight-and-morning window for the transfer.
Travellers who last flew through Lima before mid-2025 should not rely on old directions: check access routes and terminal information on the airport operator's official website before travelling.
