Hong Kong airport immigration: who can use the Courtesy Channel, the e-Channel and Smart Departure

Editorial interpretation

Passengers going through immigration at Hong Kong International Airport have more than one route, and some are entitled to a dedicated lane. The airport's passenger guide lists a Courtesy Channel for passengers with reduced mobility, visually impaired passengers, those travelling under medical supervision, pregnant passengers, those travelling with an infant, passengers aged 65 or above and diplomatic passport holders. Each eligible user may bring one companion.

Frequent visitors can use the e-Channel automated service. According to the airport, eligible frequent visitors apply at the Immigration Department's enrolment office in the Arrivals Hall and are informed of the result instantly. The airport also notes that the Frequent Visitor Card programme is no longer in operation, so travellers who relied on it should enrol for e-Channel instead.

For departures, Smart Departure automates the travel-document checks that an immigration officer would normally carry out, and the airport presents it as a faster way to complete departure clearance.

The page does not say which nationalities or passports qualify for e-Channel or Smart Departure. That detail sits with the Immigration Department, whose website and contact address the airport gives for further information.

Families with infants, older passengers and anyone needing assistance should look for the Courtesy Channel, while frequent visitors should confirm their eligibility with the Immigration Department before counting on the automated gates.
