Thailand plans transit experiences so connecting passengers can explore during long layovers
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has signed a letter of intent with aviation and tourism partners to develop the "Amazing Thailand Transfer Passenger Privilege", a programme offering curated experiences to eligible transfer and transit passengers during longer connections. The signing took place on 5 October 2026 at the Ministry of Transport.
The organisations named by TAT include the Department of Airports, Kasetsart University's Faculty of Engineering, the Airlines Association of Thailand, Thai Airways International and Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Company Limited. The ceremony was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn and Deputy Minister of Transport Phattrapong Phattraprasit.
TAT says it will coordinate with partners to link airports with nearby cities, attractions, communities and tourism businesses, building routes and experience menus around the time passengers have available, with attention to convenience, safety, ground transport and getting back to the airport on time. Initial work focuses on practical passenger privileges and "Transit Experiences", with results used to decide on any expansion. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said Thailand can turn time between flights into time spent discovering the destination.
The announcement does not name participating airports, eligibility rules or a launch date, so the programme cannot yet be booked. Passengers planning a long layover in Thailand should also check whether their nationality, visa status and itinerary allow them to leave the airport.
