Zurich Airport liquids: 2-litre limit for departing passengers, 100 ml still applies in transfer
Editorial interpretation
Passengers starting their journey at Zurich Airport may carry liquid containers of up to 2 litres in hand baggage, while transfer passengers remain subject to the 100 ml limit, according to Flughafen Zürich AG. The higher limit took effect on Friday, 26 June 2026, after the airport completed the conversion of its Security Control Building to CT scanners.
The airport says the new scanners allow three-dimensional analysis of hand baggage, so liquids and electronic devices may stay in bags at all screening lanes in that building, and liquid containers no longer need a separate plastic bag. Double-walled containers such as thermos bottles must be empty, and analogue photographic film may be damaged by CT scanners, so passengers are advised to present it and request manual screening.
Transfer areas have not yet been equipped with the new technology. Transfer passengers may only carry liquids in containers of up to 100 ml, packed in a resealable 1-litre plastic bag, with other liquids in checked baggage. For them, larger quantities of liquid medication, baby food and special foods needed for the journey may be taken in hand baggage.
The airport also states that a maximum of two power banks, each up to 100 watt-hours, may be carried, in hand luggage only.
Zurich has not given a date for converting the transfer areas, and return or connecting flights may be subject to different liquid rules at other airports, so passengers should check each airport before travelling.
