What are my rights at ORD?

If your airline cancels a flight to, from or within the United States involving O'Hare International Airport, US DOT refund protections may apply when you choose not to travel and do not accept a replacement or voucher. A cancellation does not automatically require extra fixed cash compensation under US federal rules.

This is a country-specific guide, not a report that a disruption has occurred today. Airport identity does not prove flight status, the operating carrier, the cause or personal eligibility. Check your full itinerary.

Historical data, separate from your rights: July 2026 measured on-time and cancellation rates at ORD. Not a live disruption forecast.

To compare controllable-disruption help for the operating carrier, read the US DOT's airline-specific customer-service commitments. These are separate from a refund right.

Identify your journey through O'Hare International Airport

O'Hare International Airport serves the Chicago area in Illinois, United States. The airport identifiers are ORD (IATA) and KORD (ICAO). Use the IATA code to avoid confusing similarly named airports when submitting a claim.

Record the departure and destination airports, actual operating carrier, flight number, date and your complete connection itinerary. A booking to or from ORD does not alone establish the legal regime of every leg.

Confirm the airport code before contacting the airline

This record identifies O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois as IATA ORD / ICAO KORD. Use the code on your actual ticket and flight record. A change of airport may change the evidence you need; it does not prove a legal entitlement by itself.

Other airports in this 100-airport reference set that share the recorded city or state are listed below. These are code checks only: shared geography does not establish proximity, a usable ground connection, or an alternative flight.

Source boundary: airport identities and city/region labels come from the linked OurAirports reference. AeroDue does not claim a live route, distance, inter-airport connection or operational disruption from this list.

US cancellation: refund or travel instead?

For a cancelled flight to, from or within the United States, check whether you still need to travel. DOT rules protect qualifying refunds if you decline the cancelled journey and the airline's alternatives. If you accept replacement transportation, a refund for the same journey will not ordinarily follow on the same basis.

Ask your operating airline what rebooking it offers and whether its own commitments include meals or accommodation for a controllable cancellation. Those extra commitments are not the same as mandatory nationwide fixed cash compensation.

Build your ORD cancellation case record

Answer these four practical questions against the actual flight documents. They are tailored to a cancellation involving ORD, not a determination that a specific flight is eligible for compensation.

  1. Was ORD the departure, arrival or connecting airport on the cancelled booking? Record all original and replacement flight numbers.
  2. When did the operating airline notify you of the cancellation, and what reason did it provide? Preserve the dated notice.
  3. Did you request a refund, accept replacement transport or decline the options? Keep the airline's offer and your decision.
  4. Which ticket segments went unused, what refund or care was offered, and what extra expenses can be supported by receipts?

For US cancellations, distinguish a declined replacement with a potential qualifying refund from an accepted rebooking. An airline's voluntary meal or hotel commitment is not automatic statutory cash compensation.

Evidence checklist for ORD cancellation cases

  • Keep your original ticket, booking confirmation and operating airline name.
  • Save the ORD itinerary, affected flight number and planned and actual journey times.
  • Preserve the airline's explanation, notification timestamps and any proposed replacement travel.
  • Retain itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation and transport if relevant.
  • File the request with the airline first; use the regulator's complaint route where applicable.
