Cancún passenger traffic falls 8.6% in September 2026 as ASUR's Mexican airports decline

Passenger traffic at Cancún airport fell 8.6% in September 2026 compared with September 2025, to 1,607,088 passengers, according to figures published on 7 October by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), which operates the airport. International traffic at Cancún fell 11.8% and domestic traffic 4.8%.

Across its airports in Mexico, ASUR handled 2,446,399 passengers, 6.1% fewer than a year earlier, with international traffic down 9.8% and domestic traffic down 3.7%. Some smaller airports moved the other way: international traffic rose 158.4% at Tapachula and 315.9% at Villahermosa, while domestic traffic fell 12.0% at Oaxaca and 12.5% at Minatitlán.

Outside Mexico, traffic grew. San Juan in Puerto Rico rose 3.1% to 810,085 passengers and ASUR's airports in Colombia rose 5.7% to 1,474,663. The group's Brazil and other operations rose 1.4%, a figure that includes the first full month of airports in Brazil, Costa Rica, Curaçao and Ecuador following the CPC Aeroportos acquisition. In total, ASUR handled 8,656,117 passengers, practically unchanged from September 2025.

The release does not explain the reasons for the decline in Mexico and gives no outlook for the coming months. The figures describe past traffic and do not announce any change to flight schedules, so travellers planning a trip to Cancún should check their flights with the airline.
