EES: border registration does not replace a visa

Editorial interpretation

The Entry/Exit System, or EES, electronically records entry and exit for third-country nationals on short stays in the participating European area. The European Commission describes this separately from the documents needed to travel.

The system uses travel-document information and biometric data under the applicable rules. It does not turn a visa-required traveller into a visa-exempt visitor.

Check official requirements for your nationality, residence and destination before departure. A booked flight or border registration is not, by itself, permission to enter.

The Entry/Exit System electronically records certain entries and exits of non-EU nationals making short stays in the participating European area. The European Commission describes travel-document information and biometric data collected under applicable rules. That process is separate from obtaining a visa where one is required.

Travellers need to check their nationality, residence, destination, length and purpose of stay. Having a system record does not remove passport, visa or other entry conditions. EES should also not be confused with ETIAS, which is a separate mechanism. Holding an airline reservation is not a guarantee of admission at the border; the appropriate official requirements should be checked before departure.
