Heathrow Airport handled 7.18 million passengers in September 2026, down 2.3% compared with the same month in 2025, according to figures published by the airport on 12 October. Middle East passenger traffic fell 20.1%, while the Asia-Pacific region recorded growth of 3.3%.

Aircraft movements also declined: Heathrow counted 38,820 in September, a drop of 3.4% year on year. Cargo totalled approximately 131,000 tonnes for the month, an increase of 5.4%. These measures describe different parts of the airport's operations and should not be confused with passenger numbers.

For January through September, Heathrow handled 62.901 million passengers, down 0.6% on the same period a year earlier. The airport also reports that almost 1.4 million of September's passengers were connecting between flights, a significant part of its role as an international hub.

In the same announcement, the operator argues for additional capacity and says over 40 airlines are seeking access to Heathrow. Its expansion proposals and projected benefits are positions advanced by the airport, not confirmation that additional runways or services have been approved.

For travellers, the distinction is between historical demand statistics and live operational information. Passenger growth or decline in a particular month does not by itself show whether an individual flight will be punctual, whether a route is available or how busy a terminal will be at a specific time. Check the current flight status and connecting procedures with the airline and airport.

Check the operator's latest conditions before booking or travelling.
