Swedavia halts planning of a new Arlanda pier and reprioritises investments at Stockholm Arlanda

Swedavia, the operator of Stockholm Arlanda Airport, has stopped planning and design work on a proposed new pier at Arlanda, the company announced on 2 November 2026. Its Board of Directors discontinued the work, which was at a stage before any investment decision had been taken, as part of a wider reprioritisation of planned investments.

According to Swedavia, the review looked at future capacity requirements, alternative solutions and the associated investment costs, against a background of changing passenger behaviour and airline needs. The company says it will implement important investments at Arlanda more quickly and make its operations more customer-focused and cost-efficient. The announcement does not name the projects that will be brought forward.

"We must continuously adapt our plans to changing market conditions and the needs of our customers," said Mats Johannesson, President and CEO of Swedavia. The company says most of the uncapitalised costs of the pier project, largely incurred before the COVID-19 pandemic, will be written down, weighing on its operating result in the fourth quarter of 2026 but not on its cash flow.

For airlines, Swedavia says lower capital requirements should help keep future airport charges competitive, and the decision does not affect landing and passenger charges for 2027. The release does not describe any direct change for passengers using Arlanda; which projects will be accelerated, and on what timetable, has not yet been set out publicly.
