Haneda, Narita and Naha airports to offer self-service tax refund kiosks from 1 November
Visitors leaving Japan through Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita and Okinawa's Naha airports will be able to claim their consumption tax refund at self-service kiosks from 1 November 2026, under a service called Self Tax Refund announced on 21 October 2026 by Haneda terminal operator Japan Airport Terminal and Glory Ltd.
The service supports the refund-type tax exemption system that Japan introduces in November 2026, under which eligible shoppers pay consumption tax at the till and recover it when they depart. According to the announcement, travellers tap their passport at the terminal, complete the process in about one minute and receive the refund in cash in Japanese yen. The kiosks work in Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, French, Spanish and Thai, with remote multilingual avatar staff available around the clock.
Locations differ by airport. At Haneda the kiosks sit on the third-floor departure concourse of Terminals 2 and 3, after the departure gates; at Narita they are in Terminals 1 and 2 before the departure gates; at Naha they are on the second-floor departure concourse after the gates. The companies say opening hours may change with flight operations.
Only non-residents qualify, including foreign visitors staying less than six months and Japanese nationals who have lived abroad for at least two years. The operators plan to extend the service to other Japanese airports by the end of fiscal 2027. Travellers should check the relevant airport's website for the exact kiosk location and hours before departure.
