Zurich Airport starts second Skymetro modernisation phase on 3 November with peak-time replacement buses

Zurich Airport will begin the second and final construction phase of its Skymetro modernisation on 3 November 2026, closing the tunnel that has not yet been upgraded for around six months while the airport remains in operation, Zurich Airport Ltd. said on 30 October.

The Skymetro, which has linked the Airside Centre with Dock E since 2003, is receiving new control and drive technology and is being converted from three-car to four-car trains. The first construction phase was completed in June 2026. During the second phase the Skymetro will keep running in the tunnel that has already been modernised, but at reduced capacity, and a replacement bus service will operate during the daily peak periods.

The work matters most to passengers whose departures or connections involve Dock E, the part of the airport served by the Skymetro. Once the phase ends, which is expected in May 2027, four-car trains will run in both tunnels and capacity will rise from 8,000 to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, completing the modernisation.

The release does not specify the exact hours of the replacement bus service or how much extra time passengers should allow to reach Dock E. Travellers using Dock E during the works should follow the signage at the airport and check Zurich Airport's own information before they travel.
